The following contains spoilers from Marvel Animation's What If...? Season 3, Episode 2, "What If... Agatha Went to Hollywood?," now streaming on Disney+.
The Agent Carter fandom is in high spirits today. The latest episode of What If...? Season 3 featured the surprising return of a character who debuted on the short-lived ABC drama series.
The Stark family's butler, Edwin Jarvis, returned in What If...? Season 3, Episode 2, "What If... Agatha Went to Hollywood?," with James D'Arcy reprising the role from Agent Carter. This marks D'Arcy's third appearance in a Marvel Cinematic Universe project after having previously made a surprising cameo in the 2019 blockbuster hit, Avengers: Endgame. D'Arcy wasn't the only Agent Carter alum to return for the Agatha Harkness and Kingo-centered episode. Dominic Cooper also returned as young Howard Stark, a role he first played in the 2011 film, Captain America: The First Avenger, and recurred as in Agent Carter's two seasons. Other returning MCU alums for "What If... Agatha Went to Hollywood?" included Kathryn Hahn as Agatha Harkness, Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo, and David Kaye as Arishem.

D'Arcy's return in What If...? is further proof that Marvel Studios is open to the idea of making Agent Carter canon on the MCU's sacred timeline. Created by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely -- who wrote the screenplays for the Chris Evans-led Captain America trilogy -- Agent Carter aired for two seasons and 18 episodes on ABC between 2015 and 2016. The superhero drama series was set shortly after the events of The First Avenger, following Agent Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) as she works at the Strategic Scientific Reserve (SSR) while also secretly working for Howard Stark alongside his butler, Edwin Jarvis. Despite strong reviews from critics and fans, Agent Carter was canceled after two seasons due to low viewership.
Marvel Exec Addresses Canon Status of ABC Shows
D'Arcy's What If...? appearance comes less than a week after Brad Winderbaum, Head of Marvel Television and Animation, addressed whether Marvel Studios considers the beloved ABC series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Agent Carter as part of the official sacred timeline. While an exact confirmation or denial wasn't given, Winderbaum did confirm that he has spent time trying to figure out how the two shows could exist within the canon. "Well, I'll tell you this, and put it to you like this. It's exciting for me to think about how to square those ABC shows with the canon," he remarked in December 2024. "That, to me, if you know me and the way my brain works, that is fun territory to imagine."

Season 3 is set to be the final season of the animated What If...? series, which explores alternate timelines and universes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The popular installment in the MCU is led by Jeffrey Wright, who appears in every episode as The Watcher, with guest appearances by returning MCU favorites like Hayley Atwell, Benedict Cumberbatch, Karen Gillan, Jon Favreau, Chris Hemsworth, Sebastian Stan, Kat Dennings, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner and Cate Blanchett, among others.
Although a series like What If...? could realistically continue for as long as the MCU exists, Winderbaum recently revealed why Marvel was ending the show after three seasons, explaining that "as the rest of the MCU was coming together and the Multiverse Saga was starting to find its conclusion... It just feels like the right time."
A new episode of What If...? Season 3 premieres daily on Disney+ until Dec. 29.
