John Burroughs uses inside options, powers past Collinsville in Southern Illinois Shootout

BELLEVILLE -- It's as simple as a tic-tac-toe game for John Burroughs boys basketball coach Darryl "PeeWee" Lenard.

If you take away one of the Bombers' big men, there's always another option.

"They can't take both of them away, and that was our whole game plan," Lenard said.

John Burroughs showed off its two-man motion Saturday at the Southern Illinois Classic Shootout while downing Collinsville 58-37 at Althoff High School.

Tristan Reed, a 6-foot-9 junior forward, carried the offensive load, picking up his sixth double-double of the season with 23 points and 14 rebounds. Reed scored 15 of his points in the first half.

Sheek Pearson, a 6-11 junior forward, finished with 13 points and eight rebounds. Nine of his points came in the second half.

"Their maturity and IQ of the game really enhances it a lot," Lenard said. "They love to share the ball and that's the thing that makes it work."

John Burroughs (9-3), the No. 3 small school in STLhighschoolsports.com, extended its winning streak to a season-high six games.

Chase Reynolds led the Kahoks with 11 points.

Collinsville (8-9) paid extra attention to Pearson in the first half, so Reed was the primary beneficiary.

In the second half, Reed handed off the baton to Pearson.

"It's one thing that Coach puts a heavy emphasis on," Pearson said. "Just being able to use our size and skill set, be able to work off each other.

"Just whoever is hot, that's who we feed."

The Bombers inside duo also dished out five assists when Collinsville's defense collapsed in the lane.

Practicing against each other throughout practices has helped the pair grow and unlock a new dimension to their games.

"There aren't many teams with two players at the same position at the same caliber," Reed said. "It's great competition at practice."

John Burroughs limited Collinsville to just 15-for-53 shooting from the field, with its two bigs guarding the rim. Reed accounted for four blocks, while Pearson tallied three.

Defensively, John Burroughs locked down Collinsville after a hot start.

The Kahoks scored 15 points in the first quarter. In the second half, John Burroughs limited Collinsville to just 11 points.

"They did a good job defensively and we did a poor job offensively," Collinsville coach Darin Lee said. "That kind of combination will net you 11 points."
